Gringo
- By day: Justin McGuigan, 31, postman.
- Style of Music: Hip Hop, funk, soul and anything with an addictive beat.
- Why Gringo?: Gringo was my nickname at school as one had a lot of fluff on one’s top lip area before thinking about shaving.
- Refuelling: Italian, very hot curry, lager. Oh, and beef and tomato cup-a-soups.
- On the box: Horizon, as every programme never ceases to amaze me.
- On the web: I don’t really surf the net much, bit of a technophobe.
- Warming up: I play tunes in my bedroom that I wouldn’t play at the club.
- First record bought: The first single was Mirrorman by the Human League which my dad bought me. My first album was Bon Jovi’s Slippery When Wet. I can’t believe I just admitted that.
If I could find my Human League single I would play it, what a track.
- Crowd pleasers: Loser by Beck is such a universal track, I haven’t come across anyone who doesn’t like it apart from my mum!
- Heroes: I saw Kraftwerk live at the Tribal Gathering festival in 1997. They were the first all-electronic commercial band ever. The granddaddies of dance music!
- And another thing: Here’s a hint to other DJs who are being harassed by drunk punters asking after songs that you wouldn’t play even if you had them - turn up the DJ booth monitor speakers when they are speaking to you, then you can’t hear them. Yee ha!!
